Texas Bowl Insider: Week 2

★ posted on September 08, 2009

Welcome back from Labor Day weekend!  We hope you enjoyed the return of college football and are following along as we track potential teams for the Texas Bowl.

The Texas Bowl proudly announced the 2009 Gridiron Legends at Monday night’s Houston Texans preseason game.  This year’s class includes Billy “White Shoes” Johnson, Gabriel Rivera and Grant Teaff.  In addition, Sammy Baugh became the first posthumous Legend to be honored by the Texas Bowl.  These Texas football icons were recognized on-field at halftime and signed autographs for lucky fans.

We plan to announce our bowl lineup for 2010-2013 very soon so stay tuned!

See you at the game!

Conference Football Updates

It only takes one week to make history and that’s exactly what #20 Brigham Young did Saturday night when they upset the #3 Oklahoma Sooners 14-13.  Heisman trophy winner QB Sam Bradford went out late in the first half with a sprained AC joint (shoulder) and did not return.  The Oklahoma Sooners and the Colorado Buffaloes were the only teams in the Big 12 to not come away with wins this week.

The Navy Midshipmen may have provided one of the most exciting games on Saturday when they almost upset #6 Ohio State.  Coming from behind in the 4th quarter, the Midshipmen completed a pass for 85 yards (3rd longest passing play in program history) and got within 2 points of the Buckeyes.  Unfortunately their passing success came to an end as Ohio State picked off their 2-point conversion attempt and ran it all the way back in the final minutes.  Navy fell to Ohio State 31-27.

In Conference USA action, UAB opened the season with a 44-24 win over Rice on Saturday afternoon. Senior QB Joe Webb broke the conference’s single-game record for rushing yards by a quarterback with 20 carries for 194 yards and 2 touchdowns.  Webb also completed 12-of-15 passes for 221 yard and 2 scores against the Rice Owls. The other conference match-up saw Tulsa win its season opener at Tulane 37-13. The Golden Hurricane scored 17 points in the first 9 minutes on its way to an easy win in the Big Easy. East Carolina, Houston, Marshall, Southern Miss, SMU and UCF all posted non-conference victories.

After only one week of play, the Big 12 has 6 teams ranked nationally.  Visit ESPN for this week’s complete rankings.

Games to Watch

  • #3 USC at #8 Ohio State, September 12, 7:00 PM CST, ESPN/ESPN360

Bowl Outlook

ESPN forecasters Mark Schlabach and Bruce Feldman have updated their projected 2009 bowl lineup. The Baylor Bears and the Navy Midshipmen are still picked to match up in the 2009 Texas Bowl, however upsets last weekend created new projections for a couple Big 12 powers.  CLICK HERE for the full list.
