Conference Football Updates
For the second time in the first two weeks of the season, a Big 12 power suffered a season altering up-set. This week Oklahoma State lost at home to the University of Houston Cougars. The Cowboys rallied from a 24-7 halftime deficit to take a 28-24 lead, but it did not last. The Cougars scored three touchdowns in the fourth quarter, including a 26-yard interception return for a touchdown with 3:14 left in the game, to hand Oklahoma State a stunning 45-35 loss. In additional Big 12 play, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Texas Tech and Missouri all won at home, while Texas and Kansas went on the road and claimed victories.
Although navy did not face a top-10 powerhouse this weekend, they still put on a show. Louisiana Tech scored two touchdowns in the first six minutes to take a 14-0 lead, but the Midshipmen did not panic. A steady ground attack tallied 290 yards rushing and controlled the ball for over 40 minutes of the game and lead the way to a 32-14 win.
The story of the week for Conference USA was undoubtedly the Houston upset win at Oklahoma State. Cougar QB Case Keenum threw for 366 yards and seven touchdowns. This earned him National Offensive Player of the week honors. Also in Conference USA action, SMU won at UAB to move to 2-0 after only winning Mustangs one game last season. Southern Miss won its first conference game of the season beating Central Florida 26-19, and Tulsa won 44-10 at New Mexico.
After the second week of play, the Big 12 has 5 teams ranked nationally, and Conference USA is represented by the University of Houston.
