Texas Bowl Insider: Week 4

★ posted on September 21, 2009

Once again, top ranked powerhouses fell this weekend as the Washington Huskies defeated the #3 USC Trojans in the final seconds, and Florida State routed #7 BYU on Saturday.  Other national highlights include the #2 Texas Longhorns turning the tables on the Texas Tech Red Raiders, and Tebow’s #1 Florida Gators holding off the Kiffin’s Tennessee Volunteers.

Pitt gave Navy their second loss of the season, but the remaining Midshipmen schedule looks favorable for the Texas Bowl.  Baylor fell to Connecticut, but the Texas A&M Aggies grabbed a victory from Utah State.  This weekend’s results put the Bears at 1-1 and the Aggies at 2-0 with 10 games to play.

This weekend will surely bring more excitement and continue to shake up the national rankings so don’t miss a single game as we march towards team announcements in early December.

We plan to announce our bowl lineup for 2010-2013 in the coming weeks so stay tuned!

See you at the game!

Conference Football Updates

Two games highlighted Big 12 action this week.  The #2 Texas Longhorns revenged last season’s loss to Texas Tech and the #19 Nebraska Cornhuskers dropped a heartbreaker at #13 Virginia Tech.  Texas QB Colt McCoy threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Dan Buckner in the fourth quarter to open up a 31-17 lead, and the Longhorns held on to win 34-24.  Virginia Tech QB Tyrod Taylor connected with Danny Cole for an 80-yard gain with 1:11 left in the game.  Two plays later, Taylor threw an 11-yard touchdown pass with 21 seconds on the clock to beat the Cornhuskers 16-15.  In other action, #16 Oklahoma State bounced back from last week’s loss to
#21 Houston and defeated Rice 41-24.  Iowa State snapped a 17-game road losing streak by winning at Kent State 34-14.  Colorado picked up its first win of the season shutting out Wyoming 24-0.  Texas A&M, #12 Oklahoma, #22 Kansas and Missouri all won at home.

Navy fell to 1-2 on the season after a 27-14 loss at Pittsburgh.  A failed field goal attempt in the first quarter and a failed punt attempt in the second quarter contributed to a 21-7 half-time deficit the Midshipman could not overcome.  The Navy ground attack never got on track tallying only 129 yards rushing a week after accumulating almost 300 yards.

In Conference USA action, Southern Miss moved to 3-0 for the first time since 2004.  The Golden Eagles rallied for 27 points in the second half capped by a 57-yard touchdown run to beat Virginia 37-34.  UTEP beat New Mexico State 38-12, UCF beat Buffalo 23-17, Marshall beat Bowling Green 17-10, and Memphis beat Tennessee-Martin 41-14.

After the third week of play, the Big 12 has 5 teams ranked nationally, and Conference USA has 1, the University of Houston.  CLICK HERE for this week’s complete rankings.
