Conference Football Updates
Another week of college football provided yet another week of exciting games in the Big 12. Kansas State and Iowa State kicked off their Big 12 schedules with a thriller that came down to the wire. With 32 seconds remaining in the game, Cyclones QB Austen Arnaud connected with Jake Williams to make it a 1 point game. However, K-State DB Emmanuel Lamur blocked the extra point to preserve the 24-23 victory. The #8 Oklahoma Sooners intercepted a pass on #17 Miami’s first drive, and jumped to an early 10-0 lead. Miami responded by scoring 21 unanswered points. A Sooner field goal with 4:18 left in the game brought the score to 21-20 in favor of the Hurricanes, and the Sooners never got the ball back. The loss drops the Sooners to 2-2. Baylor and Texas Tech both tallied non-conference wins with victories over New Mexico and Kent State, respectively. The Texas A&M Aggies suffered their first loss of the season, losing to Arkansas at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington.
The Navy Midshipmen improved their record to 3-2, and got a leg up on another Commander-in-Chief’s trophy with a 16-13 overtime win against Air Force. The Falcons forced overtime with a field goal as time expired in regulation. To force a second overtime, Air Force K Erik Solderberg pulled the kick wide left. Navy held the Falcons to no offensive touchdowns and Navy K Joe Buckley kicked four field goals in route to their seventh straight win over Air Force.
In C-USA action, #12 Houston was stunned by UTEP 58-41. UTEP RB Donald Buckram lead the Miner offense in the upset with 32 carries for 262 yards and 4 touchdowns. Houston QB Case Keenum completed 51 of 76 passes for 536 yards and 5 touchdowns in the losing effort. A Tulane field goal with 2:20 left in the game lifted the Green Wave to a 17-16 win over Army in West Point. SMU fell to 2-2 on the season with a loss at #11 TCU. Rounding out the conference, Tulsa beat Rice 27-10, UCF beat Memphis 32-14, East Carolina beat Marshall 21-17 and UAB beat Southern Miss 30-17.
