Texas Bowl Insider: Week 7

There were no big surprises in the Big 12 on Saturday as the favorites all pulled away with victories. Texas A&M came close to upsetting Oklahoma State, but weren’t able to hang on in the final minutes.
Navy pulled out a solid victory against Rice and stepped one win closer to the Texas Bowl. The Midshipmen will need 3 more wins to become bowl eligible.

Conference Football Updates
Week 6 brought the Big 12 excitement we have come to expect this season. #15 Kansas improved to 5-0 with a win over Iowa State in their first conference game of the season. Jayhawk QB Todd Reesing completed a school record 37 passes for a career high 443 yards. The Cyclones drove to the Kansas 31 yard line with just over two minutes remaining in the game before the drive stalled, and the Jayhawks hung on to win 41-36. #13 Oklahoma State avoided an upset this weekend beating Texas A&M 36-31. QB Zac Robinson led the Cowboy offense with 279 yards passing and 3 touchdowns. #22 Nebraska rallied for 3 touchdowns in a span of 3:22 on a rainy Thursday night in Colombia, Missouri. The 27-12 loss was the Tiger’s first of the season. Heisman Trophy winner Sam Bradford returned from a shoulder injury he suffered the first week of the season to lead the Sooners past Baylor 33-7. Texas beat Colorado 38-14 to remain undefeated. Texas Tech beat Kansas State 66-14.
Navy improved to 4-2 on the season with a blowout victory on the road against the Rice Owls. Midshipman QB Ricky Dobbs threw only 3 passes and completed 2 for 66 yards. He did however rush 20 times for 104 yards and 4 touchdowns. Navy totaled 471 yards rushing, and won 63-14.
In Conference USA action, the Houston Cougars earned their forth win of the season and third against a BCS opponent. Case Keenum completed 39 passes for 434 yards in route to a 31-24 win at Mississippi State. SMU improved to 2-0 in conference play beating East Carolina 28-21. Aldrick Robinson scored on a 96-yard touchdown reception to tie the longest touchdown pass in SMU history. Memphis beat UTEP 35-20, and Marshall beat Tulane 31-10 for conference wins
After the sixth week of play, the Big 12 has 5 teams ranked nationally and Conference USA has 1 with Houston moving back into the ranks. See this week’s complete rankings.

Bowl Outlook
Another week of exciting football action alters the bowl landscapes again. ESPN forecaster Bruce Feldman once again expects Navy to take on Baylor in the Texas Bowl. However, Mark Schlabach now predicts Navy to take on Texas A&M. See the full list.
Announcements
The Texas Bowl Competition Committee will visit 2 games this weekend. Skip Wagner will visit Oklahoma State as they host Missouri and Steve Peterson will be in Dallas to see Navy take on SMU.
The Texas Bowl will host its Volunteer Kick-Off Party on Thursday, October 15 at Sammy’s Place from 6-8 PM. All current or prospective volunteers are invited to come and learn about opportunities during this year’s bowl game.
