Texas Bowl Insider: Week 10

We hope everyone tuned in for a great weekend of football.  The big game of the week featured #3 Texas defeating #13 Oklahoma State in Stillwater, and the big news of the weekend featured #10 Oregon upsetting #5 USC, 47-20, which dropped the Trojans to #12 in the BCS rankings.  There are now 3 Big 12 teams bowl eligible and 7 teams with 5 wins, indicating that the Big 12 could potentially have 10 bowl eligible teams by the end of the season.

Navy fell to the Temple Owls this weekend, 27-24.  The Midshipmen still need one more win to become bowl eligible and qualify for the Texas Bowl.

In other news, The Texas Bowl announced the Gridiron Legends Golf Tournament Presented by OfficeMax last Tuesday.  The event will take place December 2 at Kingwood Country Club.  Visit http://www.texasbowl.org to register today!

Conference Football Updates

Week nine brought more exciting Big 12 action.  The #3 Texas Longhorns solidified their control of the Big 12 South with an impressive 41-14 win at #13 Oklahoma State.  Texas returned two interceptions for touchdowns in the dominating performance.  Texas Tech became bowl eligible with a home win over the Kansas Jayhawks.  RB Baron Batch rushed for 123 yards and 4 TDs to the Red Raiders for the 42-21 win.  Running down the list, Missouri beat Colorado 36-17, Nebraska defeated Baylor 20-10, Texas A&M routed Iowa State 35-10, and #22 Oklahoma beat Kansas State 42-30.  All of the winning teams earned their fifth victory of the season moving them within one win from bowl eligibility.  Kansas State, Kansas and Iowa State remain one game from their sixth win.

The Navy Midshipmen hosted the Temple Owls looking to secure its trip to Texas Bowl.  Instead, Temple became bowl eligible for the first time since 1979.  Bernard Pierce, the Owls freshman RB, rushed for 267 yards and two touchdowns.  Navy was held to only 254 yards of total offense in the 27-24 defeat.

In C-USA action, the Houston Cougars avoided an upset with a last minute touchdown to beat Southern Miss.  Cougar QB Case Keenum threw for 559 yards and 5 touchdowns, including a 28-yard pass to Patrick Edwards with 21 seconds left in the game, to secure the 50-43 win.  UCF scored 14 unanswered points in the fourth quarter including a touchdown pass with 23 seconds on the clock to rally past Marshall 21-20.  The win earned the Knights their fifth win of the season.  East Carolina moved to one win from bowl eligibility with a 38-19 win on Thursday night at Memphis.  SMU won their third conference game of the season with a 27-13 win on the road at Tulsa. UAB earned a conference win on the road at UTEP 38-33.

After week nine, the Big 12 has 3 teams ranked nationally, and Conference USA has 1.  See this week’s complete rankings.

This weekend’s games made for some big waves in the bowl outlook.  ESPN Bowl Predictor Mark Schlabach now predicts Missouri to play Navy and Bruce Feldman predicts Nebraska to play Navy opponent.  CLICK HERE for the full list.

Announcements

Last Tuesday, the Texas Bowl announced its inaugural Gridiron Legends Golf Tournament Presented by OfficeMax.  The tournament will be played on Wednesday, December 2 at the Kingwood Country Club with proceeds benefiting DePelchin Children’s Center and the Southern Texas PGA.  The event marks the first community event the Texas Bowl will host as part of its 2009 bowl festivities.  Visit the events page of http://www.texasbowl.org for tickets and information.

Cavender’s and Wrangler have partnered with the Texas Bowl and will provide some Texas-style merchandise for the game.  We are excited to have them on board!

The Texas Bowl Competition Committee will visit 2 games this weekend with our own Stephanie Weaver traveling to see Kansas State host Kansas and Steve Peterson on the road to see the Rice Owls take on the SMU Mustangs.
